Cover Letter Templates for Internships with Examples

Do I need to write a cover letter for an internship? Is it mandatory to write a cover letter for internships?”

If this is something that you are wondering about then the answer is “YES”.

As stated by Resumegenius, most hiring managers (94%) believe cover letters are important when determining who to interview.

After going through several internship portals when you finally get the right one to apply, you feel stuck staring at your screen wondering how to write the most suitable cover letter.

It’s quite normal to feel so, but do not feel worried as in this blog I will explain all the ins and outs of how you can write the best cover letter for your internships.

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a document that accompanies your resume when you apply for a job or an internship. It serves several purposes:

  1. It serves as an introduction or a first impression of who you are to the hiring manager or recruiter.

  2. The cover letter helps you customize your application to the specific job and organization you're applying to.

  3. It adds context to your resume by expressing why you're interested in the position, how your skills and experiences make you a good fit, and what you can offer the employer.

  4. It allows you to demonstrate your enthusiasm and passion for the position and the firm.

According to LinkedIn, 59% of hiring managers believe the cover letter provides insight into the applicant's personality and attitudes.

Key components of a cover letter

The key components of a cover letter include the following:

1. Header

  • Your contact information: Include your name, address, phone number, and email address.

  • Date: The date on which you are writing the letter.

  • The recruiter’s or hiring manager’s contact information: Name, title, company address.

2. Salutation

  • Address the hiring manager with a formal greeting. For example: “Dear Mr. Verma” or “Dear Ms. Kapoor”. Avoid using “to whom it may concern”. If you are unaware of the hiring manager’s name write “Dear Hiring Manager”.

3. Introduction

  • It’s a brief opening paragraph that introduces yourself.

  • Mention the position/ role you are applying for and how you discovered the internship.

4. Body

  • First paragraph: Express your interest in the position and the company.

  • Second paragraph: Highlight your relevant skills and accomplishments with examples demonstrating your position's capabilities.

  • Third paragraph: Emphasize why you are a strong fit for the internship and how you can help the organization succeed. Mention any other abilities or attributes that help you stand out.

5. Conclusion

  • In the closing paragraph express your enthusiasm for the internship.

  • Thank the hiring manager for considering your application.

  • Mention that you are looking forward to the opportunity for an interview.

7. Signature

  • A formal closing example- “Sincerely”, “Best regards”

  • Add your full name below.
